Large earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, the impact of a meteorite or a nuclear detonation can generate tsunamis, gigantic waves, up to 30 m high, that crash against the shores and devastate everything in their path. Earthquakes are usually the most frequent cause of tsunamis. They displace a huge amount of water to the surface; waves are formed that as they advance, gain speed and height, until hitting the mainland.
