Beginnings of Ground Transportation
Until the appearance of steam locomotives, man knew no other way to transport loads and people on dry land than with the help of animal traction. The first wheel appeared 6.000 years ago in Mesopotamia and its evolution was slow. Spoke wheels were invented 4.000 years ago, and only began to be coated with metal since the year 500 BC. At the end of the 19th century, Robert Thompson invented the tube tire. The current tubeless tire began to be developed in 1947. This infographic belongs to the Transportation series of the Ábaco collection, which also includes the original titles: The Train, Two Wheels, The Automobile and Maritime Transport.
