Plant Stems

The stem is the support of the plant, the leaves, and the flowers. It is responsible for distributing the food absorbed by the roots since it contains conductive vessels through which water and nutrients circulate. Stems come in many different shapes and sizes, reflecting their ability to adapt to the environment. They can grow in soil, water, and air. Their height determines the height of the plant. This infographic from the Ábaco collection is part of the series The Secrets of Plants, also made up of those originally titled: Photosynthesis, Underground, Flowers and Seeds.
