Ball Game

Illustreret Videnskab Historie

The peoples of Mesoamerica had in common the practice of ball game, whose origins date back to 1400 BC. This vigorous sport, played by two rival teams, was represented by the Danish history magazine Illustreret Videnskab Historie with a central infographic by Infographics90. As is customary in the Danish publication, the peripheral images — a relief representing the sacrifice of a ball player on a court in El Tajín, Mexico, a drawing and photograph of the playing field, figurines representing other Mesoamerican sporting practices, and a current note from 2019 — were produced by the magazine itself. The sheet appeared in the pages of Rundt om... (All about...), a regular section. The ball game was played with a rubber ball. According to all indications, when the game was held on the occasion of a religious celebration, the losers were sacrificed to the divinity.
